Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G First Impressions: A Barely Perceptible Crease and Fast Charging, Without Breaking the Bank

Tecno’s Phantom V Flip 5G is the company’s latest foldable phone in India, having entered the country ahead of other markets. The smartphone comes with an interesting set of specs – the company is touting the device’s camera, battery and display – and comes with an even more noteworthy price tag. It will compete with the Motorola Razr 40 series, Oppo Find N2 Flip and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 domestically. Here are our initial thoughts on the company’s latest foldable phone.

The new Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G comes in Mystic Dawn color scheme, which looks quite smooth, and the leather back panel is designed with a lychee pattern. It is also available in the signature black color option. This foldable phone doesn’t feel heavy to hold and has metal edges that are cool to the touch. The “early bird” price for the only 8GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration is Rs. It will be priced at 49,999 when it goes on sale on October 1.

The Phantom V Flip 5G features a 6.9-inch flexible AMOLED screen with an imperceptible crease – you can feel its presence when you scroll within apps, but you can barely feel it when you look at the display. This display has a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, making most content visible outdoors (except in direct sunlight).

According to Tecno, the “Hoverlock” design drop-shaped hinge on Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G can remain open between 30 degrees and 150 degrees, and can be folded up to 200,000 times. The phone can be opened with just one hand, but there’s a bit of resistance, which means it’s probably safer to use both hands.

When the display is opened at different angles, the user interface adjusts to take advantage of the new layout – for example, the camera app will display controls on the lower half of the display. This feature is also supported on other smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, but it’s nice to see it available on a foldable phone for slightly more than half the price of Samsung’s foldable phone.

In terms of appearance, the phone is equipped with a round 1.32-inch AMOLED screen surrounded by external cameras. The window is reminiscent of a circular smartwatch display and can display notifications, time and weather conditions.

The cover display also features an always-on mode that displays animated pets of your choice. However, the size of the external display means you’ll likely be opening your foldable phone more often to respond to notifications and perform other tasks.

This Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G is powered by MediaTek’s eight-core Dimensity 8050 chipset, paired with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. It is equipped with a 4,000mAh battery and supports 45W charging through the USB Type-C port. Unlike its more expensive Korean rivals, a charger is also included in the box.

Tecno has equipped the smartphone with two external cameras – a 64-megapixel RGBW sensor with af/1.7 aperture and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field of view – located around a circular external display. Internally, the phone comes with a 32-megapixel front-facing camera and a micro-slit dual-flash LED light.

The recently launched Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G seems to offer a perfect blend of design and hardware features that might allow it to compete with other foldable phones in the country.
