Tecno Pova 5 Pro 5G First Impressions: Quirky Design on a Budget

Tecno has launched the latest smartphones in the Pova series, called the Pova 5 Pro 5G and Pova 5 5G, and we take a look at the Pro model. The Pova 5 Pro 5G features a glass sandwich design with a cyberpunk-style pattern on the back, which is clearly visible through the glass. The smartphone is available in two color options, the ones we have “Dark Illusion” and “Silver Illusion”. Prices start from Rs. Priced at 14,999, the phone will go on sale on August 22.

The glass back and chrome side rails pick up a lot of fingerprints, which can quickly make the phone look messy. We have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on the power key, the volume buttons are on the right, and the SIM card slot is on the left. The USB Type-C charging port, microphone, speaker grill, and headphone jack are located on the bottom. At the top, we have the second speaker grille.

The Tecno Pova 5 Pro 5G features a 6.78-inch 120Hz Full HD+ LCD display. In the brief time I’ve used the phone, the display has gotten bright enough for indoor use, but it’s less clear when used outdoors during the day. It does deliver good colors and is very sharp. The 120Hz refresh rate also contributes to a smoother user experience.

The phone is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6080 5G SoC, which handles most tasks with ease, and games run well on their respective optimal settings. The Pova 5 Pro 5G comes in two configurations with 128GB or 256GB of storage, both with the same 8GB of RAM.

The smartphone has a 50-megapixel main rear camera that seems to be able to capture pretty good images both in broad daylight and in less-than-ideal lighting situations. It can record video at up to 2K 30fps and 1080p 60fps, which is not bad for a smartphone in this segment. There’s also a secondary AI camera here, but no ultra-wide.

The 16-megapixel front-facing camera also captures good images in daylight and indoor lighting conditions. Post-processing isn’t very aggressive either. Colors are good and images look sharp.

The Tecno Pova 5 Pro 5G comes with a 5,000mAh battery, enough to last you a day on a single charge. In my experience, I can easily use it to browse social media, click pictures, play light games and answer calls, and the phone can easily last all day. It does come with a 68W fast charger in the box, which is definitely a plus.

The main highlight of the Pova 5 Pro 5G is what Tecno calls the Arc connector, the light-emitting LED located under the rear panel. They light up in different colors when you’re charging your device, booting it up, receiving notifications, or even listening to music. The LED light is visible in a well-lit room, but outside in bright sunlight, it’s barely visible. You can customize the rate at which the lights blink through a dedicated menu, but the options are pretty limited.
