The epidemic of catalytic converter theft has slowed for the first time in 3 years, State Farm says, as insurance claims tumble

The number of claims for catalytic converter theft fell in the first half of this year, the first time this has happened since 2019, according to data from State Farm Insurance Company.

theft Catalytic converters have become problematic nationwide in recent years. Once stolen, they are often melted down to obtain the valuable metal.

State Farm said there were approximately 14,500 claims filed from January 1 to June 30. This compares with more than 23,000 claims of catalytic converter theft during the same period last year.

State Farm attributed the decline to a variety of factors, including media coverage of the issue, more legislative efforts and falling metal prices.
