July 21, 2023 will be dubbed “Pappenheimer Day,” an annual movie event where two blockbusters due in 2023 will go head-to-head for dominance. Eagle-eyed entertainment fans will notice, however, that another big movie is planned for the same day, albeit without the element of a theatrical release. The Tyrone They Clone opens worldwide on July 21 direct to Netflix, starring John Boyega, Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx.
Unlike the no-nonsense cinematic masterpieces Oppenheimer and the colorful but equally tough Barbie, their Tyrone clone takes a very different tone and approach. It’s a sci-fi thriller set in an intentionally confusing timeline and a neighborhood most people would choose to avoid. Some visible grain in the frame lends the film a retro-futuristic feel, and “Tyrone They Clone” is both absurd and gripping.
In it, John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”) plays Fontaine, a small-time drug dealer whose appearance is almost unrecognizable in a poor black neighborhood called Glenn. Teyonah Parris stars as Yo-Yo, a hooker, and Jamie Foxx stars as Slick Charles, a pimp who buys drugs from Fontaine.
A rather important element of the film is the timeline mashup. You never know when this movie is going to happen, which adds to the mystery of the movie’s more sinister plots, which are revealed gradually as you progress. Cars are new and old, phones are from about 20 years ago (with clear footage of the iconic original Moto Razr), and there’s discussion of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies that never really make you pin down the timeline.
The movie’s title itself is the biggest hint that clones are involved, but with the help of some witty character jokes from Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), it’s pretty ridiculous how that fits into the movie’s setting. Three key characters in the film realize something is wrong with their community and must work with a rather strange but very dangerous organization to take back control. The twists and turns along the way keep you hooked, as well as the goofy humor and absurd behavior of the townspeople, who seem to be drugged by a mysterious mind-controlling substance.
Assuming you’ve been to the cinema for the big “Barbenheimer” event, you might want to sit on the couch and watch a film this week. Give them a chance to clone Talon – you won’t be disappointed.
