Meta’s Threads will soon allow users to delete their Instagram accounts without disrupting them. A Meta executive said at a recent event that the company is working on releasing a separate deletion option for Threads, possibly by December this year. Recall that Threads was launched by Meta in July this year as a competitor to the Elon Musk-owned microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter). It quickly became popular, with more than 10 million people signing up for the app within the first few hours of launch.
One of the biggest disadvantages of meta-owned threads is the account deletion policy. The company has tightly integrated Threads with Instagram, which means that to delete a Threads account, users will also be forced to delete their Instagram account. However, the company now seems to be working on fixing the flaw.
According to TechCrunch ReportMeta’s Chief Privacy Officer (Product) Michel Protti recently said at TechCrunch Disrupt that the company is working on rolling out a feature that would allow users to delete their Threads accounts individually without affecting their Instagram accounts. The feature is expected to launch this December.
While he didn’t mention whether the feature would be limited to the Android or iOS apps or expanded to the desktop version as well, he elaborated that the task of implementing this feature would be extremely challenging. As of now, users can only deactivate their Threads accounts and hide content, which does no harm to Instagram. Users can also mute their Threads account to avoid receiving any notifications.
He also said the company is working on integrating Threads with fediverse, an interconnected network of independent servers designed to communicate with each other. This is nothing new, as the company has previously mentioned that Threads will be compatible with the ActivityPub protocol. However, Meta is evaluating a situation where a user decides to delete a threaded post after it has been transferred to another server.
As mentioned earlier, Threads was launched by Meta in July this year and gained over 10 million users within a few hours of launch.
