Twitter bids adieu to Bluebird as Elon Musk rebrands platform to X

Popular social media platform Twitter has officially changed its name to X after months of teasing by former CEO Elon Musk. In a rebrand, the popular social media app dropped its recognizable bird logo and replaced it with a simple X. In the rebrand, the social media app also changed its color scheme from blue to black.

As part of the rebrand, Twitter’s URL was changed to x.com, the domain associated with the financial services startup Musk founded in 1999 and later sold to PayPal.

X.com, an early online bank, was initially funded by Musk and Greg Kouri, who went on to fund Musk’s later ventures Tesla and SpaceX.

Musk has used the letter X in several of his business interests, including SpaceX and Tesla car models.

Musk formed X Corp. in March as Twitter’s parent company to make way for Twitter’s rebranding. The rebranding is part of Musk’s vision to create “super apps” with multiple functions. In April, Twitter rolled out a new feature that allows app users to access cryptocurrency markets and other financial market services from within the app.

Musk’s tenure as Twitter chief has been controversial from the start. However, his plan to transform Twitter had begun long before the acquisition.

In a recent interview, Musk reiterated that the main motivation behind the name change to X was to create an “everything app,” a concept popular in China. Chinese social media apps such as WeChat are used for text and video calls, and it is possible to pay bills, book taxis, make restaurant reservations and other financial activities without leaving the app.

Done right, X could become a popular platform for finance, banking, payments and data, and over time it has the potential to become “half of the global financial system,” Musk said.

However, Twitter’s rebranding didn’t get support from many users, who didn’t think it was a good idea to ditch the famous bluebird in favor of a new concept.
