DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union unexpectedly expands its strike across the U.S. Ford to an automaker’s highly profitable SUV and truck plant in Kentucky.
The strike went into effect at 6:30 p.m. at Ford’s Kentucky truck plant, which makes the Ford Super Duty pickup truck as well as the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. The plant employs 8,700 people.
The union decided to strike at Ford Motor Co.’s largest plant by employment and revenue, a major escalation of its targeted strikes and a change of strategy after UAW President Shawn Fain The goals of the strike were publicly announced in front of the union. A shutdown occurs.
“The UAW’s decision to strike at Ford’s Kentucky truck plant is deeply irresponsible,” Ford said, “but given the union leadership’s claims of hurting the Detroit Three through ‘reputation damage’ and ‘industrial disruption.’ Months in the making, this decision comes as no surprise.”
