Britain and Ireland will host Euro 2028, pending approval from UEFA, after Turkey withdrew its bid and focused on a joint bid with Italy for Euro 2032, according to UEFA.

The bids will await a final decision from UEFA’s executive committee next week and will be presented to European football’s governing body at a meeting scheduled for October 10 in Nyon, Switzerland.

UEFA said on Wednesday: “The presentation at the meeting will be an important part of the process and the content of the bid materials will be given due consideration before a decision is taken.”

Britain and Ireland have proposed 10 cities and stadiums to host the 2028 European Championships, with venues ranging from London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Cardiff’s National Stadium of Wales to Belfast’s Casement Park and Glasgow’s Hampton.

London’s Wembley Stadium is considered the host venue for the semi-finals and final.

The European Championship is one of the most watched events in football. Germany will host the 17th European Cup in 2024.

In 2020, Italy defeated England at Wembley to win the European Cup, becoming the reigning European Cup champions.

Britain and Ireland said they intend to offer 3 million tickets to fans, the highest number in European Championship history. They also estimate that this World Cup will bring 2.6 billion pounds of socio-economic benefits to the host country.

The stadiums chosen to take part have an average capacity of 58,000 and are part of a plan to ensure more than 80% of ticket holders can use public transport to attend European matches.

The competition arrangements are also designed to “reduce” carbon emissions as much as possible to make the competition more environmentally friendly.

London and Glasgow were the host cities for Euro 2020, but the event was postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2021 final was marred by massive rioting when more than 2,000 people entered the stadium without tickets. Baroness Louise Casey later described the disaster in a report as a moment of “national disgrace” after narrowly avoiding casualties.

Turkey, Britain and Ireland’s only rival in the process, withdrew its bid to host the 2028 World Cup after jointly bidding with Italy to host Euro 2032.

UEFA said: “As the Turkish Football Federation indicated when they submitted their request for a joint bid, their bid to host Euro 2028 has therefore been withdrawn.”
