Unstoppable Domains launches instant messaging with XMTP

Unstoppable Domains (UD) has launched an instant messaging system for Web3 username owners, according to an August 23 announcement by lead engineer Aaron Quirk. Owners of .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, or other UD registered usernames can now information Most apps that use XMTP can communicate with each other, including the UD iOS app and website, Coinbase Wallet, and Lens Protocol apps like Luster and Buttrfly. The announcement clarifies that UD for Android won’t have messaging functionality at launch, but will soon.

The new messaging integration relies on Extensible Messaging Transfer Protocol (XMTP), a separate protocol, to fully encrypt messages and send them to recipients. This means that even if UD ceases operations in the future, the messages should still be available. “No matter what happens to Unstoppable, your messages will be preserved and accessible to you,” the announcement said.

Web3 usernames have been around since 2017. They allow crypto users to associate their crypto addresses (long strings representing accounts) with more memorable names. For example, the extremely difficult to remember 0xd8dA6BF26964aF9D7eEd9e03E53415D37aA96045 could simply become “Vitalik.eth”.

These encrypted usernames have mainly been used in the past to receive payments. But some projects are trying to expand its utility to include other applications, including messaging. For example, Coinbase Wallet launched an instant messaging system on July 12, allowing users to message each other via their .eth or .cb.id usernames. Coinbase Wallet functionality also integrates with social media protocol Lens, as both projects share XMTP.

However, this shared system does not extend to usernames registered through Unstoppable Domains, such as usernames ending in .crypto or .polygon. According to an announcement from Quirk, the issue has now been resolved. Users of the Lens app or Coinbase Wallet can now message each other using their Unstoppable Domains username, among other methods.

Quirk also said the company will soon release an integration with Push Protocol, allowing username owners to sign up to receive notifications from the Web3 project. These projects will be able to send messages to users through the Unstoppable Domains website or app.

On April 26, Unstoppable Domains also partnered with Binance.US to allow its users to register domain names ending in .BinanceUS. On July 17, it reached a truce with rival Ethereum Name Service (ENS), allowing ENS .eth names to be sold on the UD store for the first time.
