Vivo launched Vivo X Fold in April last year, entering the field of foldable smartphones. The company later launched the Vivo X Fold 2 with improved cameras and new internals. The Chinese smartphone brand is now looking to enter the rollable phone segment. According to reports, both Vivo and Transsion Holdings are developing sliding phones and intend to launch them as soon as the end of next year. The latter had previewed a sliding phone called the Tecno Phantom Ultimate in September last year. Vivo and Transsion are expected to beat Samsung in the race to launch the first rollable phone.
according to a Report Vivo and Transsion Holdings are preparing to launch the world’s first rollable screen smartphone. The report quoted industry insiders as saying that the phones will debut at the end of next year. Rollable phones will have partially unfolded screens, and their screens will be able to expand or contract with the press of a button.
If Vivo or Transsion can launch a phone with a rollable display form factor in 2024, they will overtake and capture some market share of Samsung’s rollable display phones, which currently leads the foldable phone market.
Transsion Holdings, which owns brands such as Itel, Tecno and Infinix, showed off a Phantom Ultimate prototype with a rollable display in September last year. At the push of a button, the phone’s 6.55-inch display begins to expand to 7.11 inches, shaping it like a small tablet. The Tecno Phantom Ultimate features a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) rollable display manufactured by China Star Optoelectronics (CSOT). The 7.11-inch display is said to have a resolution of 1,596×2,296 and a pixel density of 388ppi.
Other prominent phone makers including Motorola, Samsung, LG and TCL have announced similar concepts in recent years. Motorola showed off the rollable Rizr concept at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2023). Samsung also previewed its prototype at CES in January. Samsung’s Flex Hybrid concept features simultaneous sliding and folding functions that switch between 10.5-inch and 12.4-inch screen sizes when opened. LG, which shut down its mobile phone business in 2021, launched the world’s first rollable smartphone at CES 2021. Oppo has also proposed the concept of a rollable phone, with a 6.7-inch screen that can be transformed into a 7.4-inch mini-tablet-sized display.
