WhatsApp has started rolling out high-definition photo sharing to all users on the chat app. Meta will roll out the feature to users in the coming weeks. With the latest update, users will be able to share high-quality and high-resolution images in WhatsApp chats on Android and iOS, and even WhatsApp Web and desktop users will be able to send images with a small “HD”. ‘ icon. Meta also announced that it will soon support sending HD video.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the feature via Facebook on Thursday postal. When adding an image to a chat thread, users will see the HD icon. The feature was tested in the beta channel earlier this year in June. HD resolution images are sharper than non-HD images, but also consume more data and more storage space to transmit.
How WhatsApp “HD Photos” Works
WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo previously revealed that the app can even slightly compress high-definition images. The default is the standard non-HD option, and users must manually select the HD option every time they plan to share a high-quality image.
In announcing the news, Meta didn’t specify how much compression the high-definition photos will employ, or how well they’ll appear compared to images delivered via Apple’s iMessage or any other competing platform.
It’s worth noting that HD photos, like any other media shared on WhatsApp, will be protected by end-to-end encryption. Recipients with slow internet connections may choose to download the standard version.
WhatsApp also recently introduced screen sharing during video calls, with a similar layout to Google Meet or Zoom. Call participants are shown in small rectangular tiles on the right side of the screen, while the shared screen is shown in the main view.
