Bitcoin Ordinals creator proposes to change inscription numbering system

Casey Rodarmor, founder and lead coder of Bitcoin Ordinals, recently proposed changes to the protocol’s numbering system in an effort to simplify the project’s code base.

Since the inception of the Ordinals protocol, every non-fungible token (NFT) created using Ordinals has been assigned a unique inscription number. They function similarly to serial numbers and have become an integral part of the digital art minted in the protocol.

However, Rodamo believes that keeping the number of inscriptions constant will lead to “ugly code and stagnant development.”Because of this, the protocol’s lead coder suggested Making inscription numbers “permanently unstable,” meaning the numbering system that assigns unique numbers to inscriptions created within the Bitcoin network will be de-prioritized.

Rodarmor said the move will simplify the protocol’s code base and make future protocol changes easier. The coder also clarified that the inscription numbers will change but will not be completely abandoned. Rodarmor emphasized that the new inscription numbers will be close to the old ones, but may differ by 1%.
