Ethereum launches new testnet ‘Holešky,’ allocates 1.6B ETH for devs

Ethereum Developer roll out A new testnet was released on September 15th. According to its developer documentation, the network is called “Holešky” and is expected to be used for staking, infrastructure, and protocol development. Sepolia will remain the dominant network for application development.

The initial supply of Holešky testnet Ethereum (HETH) is 1.6 billion will According to Ethereum developer Tim Beiko, Holešky will be assigned to validators on the day it is launched to bootstrap the network into operation. This is equivalent to 10 times the amount of Ethereum (ETH) on the mainnet. Beiko said developers are comfortable producing this amount because “development networks regularly use the 10B supply.”

Previously, the Goerli testnet was used to test new staking, infrastructure and protocol development. Goerli is the oldest running Ethereum testnet, launched in 2018. In October, protocol developers began complain Goerli’s Goerli ETH supply is too small to fully meet testing demand. Given the large initial supply of HETH, Holešky is expected to help alleviate this problem.

Since the launch of Sepolia in 2021, the Ethereum team has been urging application developers to migrate from Goerli to Sepolia, leaving only protocol developers to stay on the old network until Holešky launches. The team plans Deprecated Goerli will launch in January 2024. According to its documentation, after deprecation, Goerli will be maintained for another year and then shut down completely.

Holešky could be of great use as Ethereum developers have an ambitious roadmap in front of them. They intend to implement primitive danksharding, danksharding and other features they believe will reduce costs, as well as features such as Verkle trees, aimed at reducing the running costs of nodes. Each of these features will need to be trialled on testnet before being implemented on mainnet.
