Lufthansa plans to soon let its passengers collect rewards in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and interact with Web3. Lufthansa is launching a new loyalty program where passengers can collect reward points in the form of NFT trading cards. From business lounge coupons to free miles and frequent flyer status, these NFT trading cards from Lufthansa will unlock a host of amenities for travelers. The name of this new loyalty program has been settled on “Uptrip,” and the NFTs that are part of the program are based on the environmentally friendly Polygon blockchain.

Lufthansa will allow eligible passengers to connect their digital wallets in order to mint, transfer and trade these Uptrip NFT cards.

The NFT cards offered are divided into different categories, including city, airplane, and discounted cards.

“Users will be able to choose from hundreds of cards, including cities (Lisbon, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Singapore, etc.), aircraft (Airbus A320, Boeing 747, Embraer 190) and special fares (New Year’s Eve flight, Transit Arctic, etc.). Since the soft launch, more than 20,000 users have registered and more than 200,000 trading cards have been issued,” said the Lufthansa Innovation Center in a statement. polygon website.

The Lufthansa Group is a major European airline with more than 38 million members in its Miles and More rewards program. As such, its decision to explore Web3 could attract millions of people into the digital asset space.

“Web3 is in the early stages of development. Curiosity is high. However, we also encounter doubts and hesitations – this is the pain point of Uptrip. We enable people to use this new technology.” A report by Zycrypto lead Kristian Weymar, Director of New Business at the Lufthansa Innovation Center.

The Uptrip app is already available on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

However, this is not the first time a major airline has decided to foray into the digital asset space. Back in May of this year, Japan’s famous Japan Airlines (ANA) launched its own online marketplace for trading, selling and buying aviation-themed NFTs.

In April last year, Emirates also joined the ranks of Metaverse and NFT.
