Google Pixel 9’s Tensor G4 SoC Might Not Bring Significant Upgrades: Report

Google will hold a Pixel hardware launch event on October 4 to launch the highly anticipated Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones. The tech giant is expected to equip the Pixel 8 series with the next-generation Tensor G3 SoC as an upgrade from the Tensor G2 SoC used in the Pixel 7 series. Google hasn’t confirmed details about the new internal chip, but before that, we’ve heard about next year’s Pixel 9 series. Google’s next-generation branded SoC — the Tensor G4 — is expected to power the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. A minor upgrade is expected compared to the Tensor G3 SoC. Google’s fully customized Tensor chip may debut in the 2025 Pixel 10 series.

according to a Report Designed by Android Authority’s Kamila Wojciechowska and codenamed “Zuma Pro,” the Tensor G4 SoC will power next year’s Pixel 9 series. It will reportedly feature minor performance upgrades over the nine-core Tensor G3 SoC (known internally as “Zuma”). The Tensor G4 SoC is likely to be a semi-custom chip and will be co-designed with Samsung’s system LSI division.

According to reports, Google initially planned to equip its 2024 Pixel series smartphones with a “fully customized” Tensor SoC code-named “Redondo”. The chip is built based on TSMC’s process node. However, due to production delays, the chipset’s debut is said to be delayed by a year. The company is said to have created a development board called “ChallengerDeep” to develop this chip.

In addition, it is reported that Google is developing a next-generation fully customized Tensor chip code-named “Laguna Beach” for the 2025 Pixel (also known as the Pixel 10 series). The chip’s development board is codenamed “Deepspace”.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, powered by Tensor G3, will be launched at the Made by Google event in New York on October 4 at 10:00 am local time (7:30 pm IST). The Pixel Watch 2 and new colors of Pixel Buds Pro will also debut during the event.

Both Pixel 8 series smartphones are expected to come with Android 14 and 120Hz refresh rate displays. The Pixel 8 Pro is expected to be equipped with a 4,950mAh battery and support 27W wired fast charging. At the same time, Pixel 8 may be equipped with a 4,485mAh battery that supports 24W wired charging and 12W wireless charging.

At Google I/O 2023, the search giant repeatedly told us it cares about artificial intelligence, launching its first foldable phone and Pixel-branded tablet. This year, the company will use artificial intelligence technology to enhance its apps, services and Android operating system.
