Google may consider adding an under-display camera to its future Pixel phones. The tech giant has patented new technology for the under-display front camera that would eliminate the punch-hole cutout on the screen. It will allow the camera to be hidden under the screen when not in use and give users more screen real estate for an uninterrupted viewing experience. The introduction of new technologies will give Google an advantage over Apple’s iPhone models. Samsung’s high-end Galaxy Z Fold series of foldable phones already has an under-display camera (UDC).

The patent points to new features for the screens of Pixel phones. The patent explains a new under-display front-facing camera that would allow Google to place the camera below the display panel without the need for a separate hole-punch cutout or notch. This will give users an uninterrupted full-screen experience.
According to Google’s patent application, the display needs to be emissive and allow light to be transmitted to the camera. An emissive display should have one or more sections through which light travels to reach one or more camera sensors located beneath the panel. According to the description, the portion of the display through which light is transmitted to the camera sensor is used as part of the phone’s light-emitting display.
Google states that a computing device may include a display with two or more cameras beneath the display, and that light may pass through one or more parts or areas of the display to the cameras while the display continues to perform the function of the display. “Such example implementations are superior to conventional displays because the user experience is improved when the display performs the functions of a display (eg: displaying an image) over a large area of the device and allows the use of the camera without interrupting the operation of the display.” it added.
In addition to the patent’s detailed description, the document also includes images that provide further reference for ongoing experiments.
Google hasn’t revealed any details about the Pixel devices’ under-display front-facing cameras. The patented technology is only available for testing and is expected to change before final release.
Brands such as ZTE and Xiaomi have already launched this technology earlier. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series also places the camera below the display. However, introducing an under-display camera on Pixel phones would give Google a dominant position on the iPhone.
