This week’s episode Decentralization The level of adoption of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in Lugano, a quintessential Italian city in southern Switzerland, was also investigated. The city adopted Bitcoin as de facto legal tender a year ago and has made significant progress since then – the Bitcoin “B” logo is hard to miss downtown.

There are more than 200 vendors in Lugano who accept Bitcoin. Big brands such as McDonald’s, Rolex and even Lamborghini will accept cryptocurrency, while some pharmacies, convenience stores and tobacconists will also accept it.
However, Bitcoin is still not deeply or widely understood, and there is still a lot of work to be done if Lugano is to one day fully embrace it, as Ardoino explains:
“I wish I could say our work is done, but I think we are just getting started. The most important thing is the education of business people.”
Point-of-sale devices used by merchants across Lugano also accept Tether (USDT) and Luga (a token that can be used by locals and residents).
