Lufthansa airline launches NFT loyalty program on Polygon

Lufthansa, one of Europe’s largest airline groups, has launched a non-fungible token (NFT) loyalty program on the Polygon Network. The program will allow passengers to convert their trips into NFTs, unlocking rewards like miles and business lounge coupons.

It’s August. 31. Lufthansa Announce The Uptrip mobile app is a joint project between the Lufthansa Innovation Center (the airline group’s digital innovation arm) and Miles & More (the airline’s frequent flyer program).

Airline passengers can use the app to scan boarding passes and redeem them for NFT trading cards, according to the announcement. Within the app, users must connect their crypto wallets to mint and transfer their Uptrip NFTs. Once passengers complete specific NFT collections, they will be eligible for rewards such as flight upgrades, airport lounge access, frequent flyer status or award miles.

Kristian Weymar, executive at the Lufthansa Innovation Center, said in the announcement that Web3 is still in its early stages, as users are curious but still hesitant to put it to use. Weymar emphasized that the project seeks to make Web3 accessible to customers.

Christopher Siegloch, project development director at Miles & More, said there was a lot of interest in Uptrip. The announcement states that over 20,000 registrants and 200,000 NFT trading cards have been minted.

Earlier this year, Lufthansa expressed interest in integrating Web3 technology into its business. On May 12, Johannes Walter of the Lufthansa Group said in an interview with Cointelegraph that decentralization and tokenization will bring opportunities for new business models.

Meanwhile, other players in the aviation industry have also announced their intention to implement Web3 in their operations. In 2022, Emirates, the largest airline in the United Arab Emirates, also announced plans to accept bitcoin payments and launch NFT.
