A leaked email from 2020 revealed that Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer briefly considered acquiring Nintendo. On Tuesday, multiple documents from Microsoft’s trial with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission were leaked, including one showing casual discussions about buying the product. mario Spencer called it a “career moment” and suggested the partnership would be a “good move” for both companies. It is worth highlighting that this conversation took place in August 2020, when Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda, for $7.5 billion (approximately Rs. 62,431 crore). The leak also revealed Bethesda’s release schedule, as well as details on Microsoft’s planned update for mid-generation consoles.
In response to comments from Microsoft executives Chris Capossela and Takeshi Numoto, Spencer said: “I have had many conversations with Nintendo LT about closer cooperation, and I feel that if there is Any American company that has the opportunity to work with Nintendo, we’re probably in the best position.” Email (via edge). He then went on to list some of the obstacles in an acquisition, starting with the fact that Nintendo is happily sitting on “a pile of cash,” making any hostile takeover effort futile. He claimed that it took Nintendo a long time to realize that their games would thrive more if they weren’t limited to their own platforms. In the same email, Spencer also discussed the acquisition of Valve Corporation (whose president Gabe Newell once worked at Microsoft), noting that if some positive action occurs, Microsoft’s board of directors will fully support it.
In addition to ZeniMax, Microsoft also appears to be actively involved in acquisition discussions with Warner Bros. Interactive, which published Hogwarts Legacy earlier this year. However, this interaction raises questions about the ownership of intellectual property rights – for example, Microsoft will not hold the rights to DC Comics characters, etc., thus compromising “long-term flexibility.” For ZeniMax, meanwhile, the question is more money-based, judging by its founders’ expectations for the acquisition.
The leaked documents also reveal a list of Bethesda’s unannounced games, including a remaster of Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, an open-world role-playing game set in Cyrodiil. The planned game chart was put together in July 2020, so there are some changes to the release schedule. Annihilation remaster was originally slated to release in 2022, but the only update we’ve heard so far comes from rumor Virteous Games is claimed to be developing the project.
