NatWest has named former Mastercard chairman Rick Haythornthwaite as its new chairman, ending a turbulent period in the bank’s leadership.
Haythornthwaite will join the NatWest board in January and succeed Sir Howard Davies when his term expires in April. A Treasury insider said Haythornthwaite was considered “widely respected and experienced” in British government circles. Sky News first reported the appointment.
“I inherit a very different NatWest bank than my predecessors; a company that is more customer-focused, financially resilient and well-positioned to maintain its recent strong performance,” Haythornthwaite said.
“I look forward to working with the Board to build on the excellent progress we have made so that we can continue to support the UK economy and deliver for our customers and stakeholders.”
