Nigeria to issue verifiable blockchain certificates for NYSC

National Information Technology Development Authority (NITDA) Director General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi revealed that blockchain technology will be used for the generation and verification of Nigerian National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates .

NYSC is a Nigerian program that requires university graduates under the age of 30 to undertake a year of national service involving community development projects and intercultural integration.

The Director General of NITDA emphasized that NYSC certificates are prone to mass forgery in Nigeria. Therefore, the Director General sought help from NITDA and a mutual agreement was reached to help create a blockchain-based certificate authentication system. The initiative aims to store all NYSC certificates on the blockchain, providing individuals with a means to easily verify and verify them.

Additionally, Abdullahi also elaborated on plans to provide blockchain-powered certificates to individuals who successfully complete NITDA’s training programs. He also highlighted the Nigerian central bank’s willingness to work with the wider ecosystem.

According to the NITDA chief, blockchain has enormous economic potential and is a practical way to delve into the broader prospects of blockchain technology and its application in certificate issuance. Abdullahi said:

“I believe that blockchain can add $1.7 trillion to global GDP and will be a good technology that Nigeria can leverage. If we position ourselves according to the BWC report, Nigeria’s GDP can increase by 2030.” About $40 billion.”
