Redmi 12 5G First Impressions: An Affordable 5G Experience

Redmi 12 5G has been officially launched in India. Xiaomi’s new 5G smartphone made its global debut in India and is the company’s most affordable 5G smartphone yet, starting at just Rs. 10,999. The device brings some leading features such as glass back, new Snapdragon SoC, and more. Is the Redmi 12 5G genuine? While we get into our full review, here are our first impressions of the phone.

Starting with the unboxing, the Redmi 12 5G comes with all the necessary accessories such as a SIM card tray, a translucent protective case, and some documentation. The box also comes with a 22.5W fast charger and USB Type-A to Type-C data cable.

Redmi 12 5G uses glass back panel

Redmi 12 5G comes in three colors. Xiaomi sent us the Moonlight Silver color, which has a glass back with a shiny finish that creates a prismatic color when light hits it. The phone is also available in classic black and light blue.

The Redmi 12 5G feels quite heavy, mainly due to the large battery and glass back design. Xiaomi has managed to keep the weight under 200 grams while maintaining the thickness at 8.17mm. For extra protection against drops and scratches, the Redmi 12 5G comes with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass on the back.

Redmi 12 5G comes with a 6.79-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD that supports 90Hz refresh rate. The screen is said to offer a peak brightness of 450 nits. Indoors, the display gets bright enough to consume content. Due to the rain in Mumbai, we were unable to test the display’s performance in outdoor conditions, but stay tuned for our full review.

There is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC under the hood. The base variant comes with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage and is priced at Rs. 10,999. The 6GB RAM variant is priced at Rs. 12,499, while the top-end variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage is priced at Rs 12,499. 14,999. The phone is also equipped with a 5000mAh battery and supports 18W fast charging.

The Redmi 12 5G comes with a dual-camera setup on the back with a 50MP primary camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The phone has an 8-megapixel front-facing camera inside the center-aligned punch-hole cutout of the display. To make the camera experience more interesting, Xiaomi has added some filters based on its experience working with Leica.

Redmi 12 5G runs MIUI 14 and comes with some UK media apps pre-installed

In terms of software, Redmi 12 5G launches the latest MIUI 14 based on Android 13. The software does offer many customization and personalization options. However, there are some bloated software applications pre-installed. Other specifications include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, AI-based facial recognition, IR blaster, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
