WhatsApp HD Video Sharing Feature Rolls Out to Users on Android: How it Works

WhatsApp’s HD video sharing feature has started rolling out to Android users, a few days after the Meta-owned messaging platform rolled out support for sending high-resolution images. Until now, WhatsApp compressed all videos sent on the platform, which resulted in lower-resolution videos being seen by recipients. While this offers clear benefits in terms of faster file transfers and lower data and storage usage, the Messages app now allows users to choose to send specific videos in high resolution.

As the WhatsApp for Android 2.23.17.74 update started rolling out to users on Thursday, the app now shows hd icon at the top of the screen when selecting a video to share with a contact. When this option is toggled, WhatsApp will share videos at 720p resolution instead of the standard and default 480p resolution.

Gadgets 360 employees’ phones will be able to use the feature after updating to the latest version of WhatsApp for Android. It’s unclear when the feature will roll out to users on the stable version of WhatsApp for iOS, which is currently in beta testing.

It’s worth noting that users will need to toggle the option each time to send higher-resolution videos. By default, the app will send video at “standard” resolution — by 2023, when smartphones come with Full HD and Quad HD displays, 480p will actually be considered low resolution. This is presumably done to ensure that media sent and received on WhatsApp doesn’t end up taking up too much space on the user’s smartphone.

If you want to send high resolution videos on WhatsApp, you can follow the steps below after updating to the latest version of WhatsApp for Android. Please keep in mind that this feature may not be available for all users.
